Addressing Capitol Hill Unrest

New World UMCPastor's Blog

Dear New World Church family,

I write to you considering the tragic events and assault that unfolded on Capitol Hill this week. We have seen another example of political violence and civil unrest again. Over the last few years, such behavior has become frighteningly commonplace. We are living in unprecedented times, and we face many challenges ahead. But we have the strength to overcome and make things better for all people.

As your pastor, I won’t ever push any particular ideology or political agenda on you. New World is for all people, whether they lean left or right or anything in between. However, I will challenge you with the tenets of the teaching of Jesus so you may make choices that witness to our faith as disciples of Jesus. My commitment to you is to listen to you and walk alongside your faith journey to engage you in spiritual growth that informs and shapes your character for your sake and the sake of others.

This is the time for us to come together as the Church of Jesus Christ and as a fellow American family. We need to put a stop to the political vitriol that has destroyed so many relationships and friendships. When we treat people as enemies, they will act as enemies, but in doing so, we destroy one another for a house divided cannot stand.

So, let’s lead by example. We have the power to stop the division and tearing down of our families, friendships, communities, and nation. If we keep and follow the teachings of Jesus, we will bring healing to our republic.

My prayer, and I invite you to join me too, is that may the horror and sadness of these recent acts in our nation be a turning point in our history where we choose to come together and move forward to address challenges rather than attacking each other.

Whatever issues we may believe in, whatever goals we may have for our nation, let’s approach them knowing we are disciples of Jesus first.

We have much to be grateful for as we hope for better days ahead.

Pastor Edgar.

Peace.
