Palm Sunday: Trusting God In Times of Triumph and Sorrow

Palm Sunday marks Jesus’ entrance into Jerusalem for the last week of his life, a week before his resurrection. It is known as “Passion Week” and symbolizes the final seven days of Jesus’ earthly ministry. This event fulfilled prophecies from the Old Testament, such as Zechariah 9:9, which speaks of a humble king bringing salvation and peace to Jerusalem, “Rejoice greatly, O daughter Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you; triumphant and victorious is he, humble and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.” This prophecy was then fulfilled when Jesus entered Jerusalem for the last time, as it says in Luke 19: 37, “[T]he whole multitude of the disciples … Read More

We are well over halfway in our Lenten journey towards Easter. In fact, we are nearing the end. Next Sunday, we start Holy Week celebrating Palm Sunday. This means that today is the last message of the series “Called,” where we have been learning how and why God gives us a calling. We have been studying the calling stories of different Bible characters for the last four weeks. For example, from Abraham’s calling, we learned that God called him to be a blessing to all the families of the earth. From Moses’ calling, we learned that he was called as a response to the prayers of people asking God for deliverance from the suffering and oppression of the Egyptians. From … Read More

And from Esther, we learned that we could also assume our calling when we become aware of a need or an injustice and step into … Read More

This is the third Sunday of Lent. In our sermons series entitled “Called,” we have been learning about how and why God calls people. Two weeks ago, we learned the story of Abraham and how he had to take a leap of faith before the path was revealed to him. Abraham’s call was to “bless all the families of the earth.” Last week, we also learned Moses’ story of God calling him to free God’s people as they prayed for deliverance. Moses’ calling was a response to someone’s prayers. Today, we are on our third calling story. For that, we are studying the story of Queen Esther. Queen Esther’s calling adds another component to the nature of God’s calling: to … Read More

Last week we started this series of messages entitled “Called.” As we journey through the Lenten season, we will learn how and why God gives us a calling for our lives. In our United Methodist tradition, we believe in the Ministry of all Christians. We understand all believers are called through their baptism to the ministry of servanthood in the world to the glory of God and for human fulfillment (BOD, Par. 126). All of us, not just clergy, are called to serve God in the world. The question is, how do we know what we are supposed to do? How do we discern our calling? God may use our gifts at our jobs to do good in the world … Read More
