Christmas Is About God

“Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” Luke 2:13-14 (NIV)

Let’s not be mistaken, Christmas is all about God. It’s the story of God sending God’s Son, Jesus Christ. Our salvation is initiated by God and ultimately accomplished by the sacrifice of the Son of God, Jesus. The people and events that surround Jesus’s birth are not impressive, but they reveal a God who is. Mary and Joseph were teenagers, Bethlehem was not a grand town, and Jesus was born in a lodging for animals. Let’s be clear, Christmas was accomplished by God and God alone. Yet, the angels describe the birth of Christ as “good news of great joy for all the people.” This is what makes Christmas good news. Generation after generation longed to see the Savior of Israel. We are blessed to receive what they longed for. The good news of this gospel message should cause our hearts to rejoice and overflow with praise. In the birth of Christ, the hopeless find hope and the lost are found. Christmas is for all people. This good news of great joy was for the poor shepherds in Israel and the rich wise men from faraway lands. It was for God’s people then and it is for the world today. This good news of great joy is for you and for me. The heavenly host, the angel, and the shepherds praised God on the day of the Savior’s birth. Since Christmas is all about God, let’s join them and glorify God this Christmas.

Merry Christmas
